Cross database pagination problem and how we solved it

When we are developing a webapp with any type of listing, pagination is a must have feature. From the UI perspective we can use infinite scrolling or pages approach.

If you are familiar with google search this is how google uses the second approach,

Now the problem is how we generate listing for a particular page?
Lets take a hypothetical library application where we need to list down existing books, assume we need to list 10 books per page.

This is how we query books to generate the 1st page,

SELECT * FROM BOOKS LIMIT 10;

to generate the 2nd page,

SELECT * FROM BOOKS LIMIT 10 OFFSET 10;

So easy,  by providing the offset value we can dynamically generate our pages.

BUT can we use the same across database types?

If you know the exact backend DB type you gonna use in production, lucky you!
But if you are developing a product which needs to support multiple DB types (MySQL, Oracle, Postgres, H2 ....) above query will fail in some of them. For example above will work in MySQL, H2 and Postgres but will not work in Oracle.

In Oracle 11g you can run following but not in 12c

Now lets discuss how we solved this problem. Following is high-level architecture of the solution.







In this scenario we have exposed all CRUD operations as OSGI services to the outside world. This component may or may not have DB specific logic. But for sure we dont have any DB type specific logic within our main OSGI component. We have delegated all those DB type specific logic to the DB Adapter.

What are the DB type specific things we can have?

1. Above pagination related stuff (LIMIT, OFFSET)
2. Auto generate key usage(getGenaratedKeys)

How to load correct DB Adapter class through reflection

We can maintain a configuration file where we state the DB Adapter class. Then read that class name within our main component and use/call through reflection.

0 A.D., a free, open source historical war and economy game has reached alpha 21. The new release includes new maps, new game modes, as well as the official introduction of the Seleucid Empire.

Important changes in 0 A.D. Alpha 21 "Ulysses" include:

• 11 random map scripts and 2 skirmish maps;
• the Seleucid faction was completed by adding the models for the Colonnade, Barracks, Wonder, Market, Corral, Blacksmith, Dock, Library, Military Colony and City Walls;
• new gameplay features:
• • Herocide/Regicide: you start with a hero and are defeated when he or she dies.
  • Wonder Victory: now you can change the time from when the wonder is built to when you win. Either set it to 0 so you win as soon as the wonder is built or to anywhere between 1 and 120 minutes for a chance for the opponents to destroy it before the match is won;
  • Last Man Standing: only one player can win the game. Form temporary alliances to eliminate common competitors. But be careful: as the remaining players struggle for victory, allies are forced to turn against you. This mode can be played with every victory condition;
  • new balancing;
  • buildings and units can now be upgraded;
• the game now supports hosting on arbitrary UDP ports, which can be useful if your ISP blocks the default port;
• various user interface improvements, like multiplayer lobby match details, a new Objectives dialog that reveals the chosen matchsettings in running games, and more.

0 A.D. is still considered in alpha because some features are still missing. However, the game is playable, and it features great graphics and sound, as well as a powerful map editor.

There are also a few bugs you should be aware of. Most importantly, large maps are known to problems, formations are disabled, and you may experience lag when there are many moving units.

Ubuntu 17.04, 16.10 and 16.04 / Linux Mint 18 users can install the latest version of the game by using its PPA. Add the PPA and install 0 A.D. using the following commands:

Cross Platform Android Emulator Genymotion 2 1 0 Brings Android 4 4 Support

Genymotion 2.1.0 has been released, the new version bringing some new features as well as support for the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.

For those not familiar with Genymotion, this is a fast, cross-platform Android emulator that comes with pre-configured Android (x86 with OpenGL hardware acceleration) images which support multi-touch gestures, Ethernet, emulation widgets for GPS, battery, camera and more.

Genymotion is available as free to use but without some features, or with a license (Indie or Business) which enables extra features.

Genymotion 2.1.0 brings new features for both the free and commercial versions:

• new commercial features:
• edit Android ID and Device ID (IMEI/MEID number) values from Genymotion;
• a new "pixel perfect" mode was added - in this mode, each pixel of the device will be displayed using only one pixel of your monitor;
• factory reset;
• clone virtual devices;
• new features for all users:
• Genymotion now supports copy/paste from the host to the virtual device, or from the virtual device to the host using Android built-in copy/paste feature;
• virtual device CPU number and memory size can now be modified from the device settings;
• bug fixes:
• you can now resume virtual devices download;
• when downloading a virtual device, Genymotion could crash if a timeout occurred. This issue is now fixed;
• the window size of the virtual device is now correctly resized to fit the host screen when rotating;
• when uninstalling Genymotion on Linux, the directory specified on installation was deleted, sometimes deleting non-Genymotion files. Genymotion now uses its own directory to fix the problem.

Also, all users (both paid and free) can now use the latest Android 4.4 KitKat with the following virtual devices: Galaxy Note 3, Moto X, Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10.

Harganya relatif terjangkau dan kinerjanya pun lumayan merupakan kombinasi oke untuk mereka yang mencari android yang dual SIM. Smartphone ini didukung dual-ON, jadi kedua kartu yang dipasang dapat aktif bersamaan. Kita bisa tentukan mana yang menjadi default untuk bertelepon maupun ber-sms. Sedangkan untuk akses data, salah satu SIM langsung dijadikan default oleh sistem. Kalau mau menyetel ulang, bisa lewat setting > SIM > Management.

Pesaing yang paling dekat adalah Mito A322, banderol juga murah, menjadikan ponsel lokal ini kandidat rekomendasi di kelas sejutaan. Selain dual core, layarnya sudah bisa menampilkan video High Definition.

Kinerja

Hasil benchmark memperlihatkan skor yang lumayan bagus bahkan sempat tampak lebih baik dari Samsung Galaxy Tab generasi pertama.

Tampaknya meski androidnya masih gingerbread, kombinasi prosesor 1 Ghz dan storage besar, cukup berhasil mendongkrak kinerja. Seberapa jauh iini bertahan, masih perlu pembuktian lebih lanjut, saat storage sudah pol diisi aplikasi.

Ada aplikasi ekstra pendukung kinerja seperti:

• Advanced Task Killer.
• App 2 SD.
• Backup master.
• dan sebagainya.

Cross A20 dimasuki juga aplikasi tambahan seperti:

• Angry birds dan solo lite untuk game.
• Ebuddy dan facebook untuk media sosial.
• Mini lyrics untuk player musik.
• QQ browser untuk browsing.
• Keyboard dan wireless untuk kemudahan koneksi ke keyboard nirkabel.

Tentu saja kita bisa dengan mudah menambahkan aplikasi lain yang diinginkan.

Secara deafult, homescreen terdiri dari 5 jendela, dan 2 diantaranya berisi pintasan meski tak signifikan. Tak ada modifikasi khusus pada tampilan. Setting internet operator langsung dikenali. Oh iya, smartphone cross A20 ini maksimal hanya mendukung EDGE di jaringan.

Sementara itu, untuk koneksi internet hasil terbuka dengan cepat rata-rata memerlukan waktu 16 detik.

Koneksi internet dari handset bisa dishare dengan perangkat lain lewat Setting > wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.

Musik player, Video dan Radio FM

Earphone haru ditanjapkan agar radio bisa dipakai. Pengaturannya simpel saja, diantaranya adalah ada earphone dan speaker untuk opsi dengar. Power untuk menghidupkan atau mematikan radio. Meski simpel ternyata kita bisa merekam siaran radionya.

Untuk memutar musik ada 2 pilihan, mau pakai music atau mini lyrics. Di music ada pengaturan sound effect, sementara di miini lyrics aplikasinya otomatis mencarikan teks lagunya. Serasa memiliki karaoke pribadi saja.

Tak ada pengaturan tambahan di video player. Player ini bisa menjalankan format file populer namun ukurannya harus kecil.

Kamera

Kamera utama 3 MP dan silengkapi dengan flash. Kamera baru bisa akan berfungsi kalau ada microSD sudah terpasang. Pengoperasian kamera dengan memakai shutter sentuh. Perpindahan antara mode foto dan video dilakukan dari ikon di sisi jendela, begitu juga perpindahan antara kamera utama dan kamera depan.

Pada kemera utama dan depan ada tambahan mode smile shot dan burst selain normal. Kemudian ada multi angle view, panorama dan auto scene detection selain camcorder dan normal untuk kamera utama. Face detection ada pada kamera utama maupun kamera depan.

Hasil fotonya biasa saja, yang terbaik adalah saat obyek diam dan kondisi cukup cahaya. Cenderung banyak noise, kurang tajam. Video cukup mulus ketika di putar dan dibuka di komputer. Foto maupun video bisa dishare ke facebook, messaging, bluetooth dan email.

Desain

Desainnya tak banyak beda dengan beragam smartphone lain yang berlayar 5 inch yang sudah ada di pasar. Meski ukuran bodi terbilang besar, bobotnya ternyata lumayan ringan untuk ditenteng. Bisa jadi bahan plastiklah yang ada pada casing sehingga mengurangi bobot. Namun permukaan mengkilap seperti biasany mudah menyimpan sidik jari jemari.

Pada sisi layar bawah diisi panel sentuh Menu dan Back diapit tombol HOME. Kaca 5 inch itu sendiri menyatu dengan panel sentuh sehingga terkesan sangat luas. Layar sentuh tergolong responsif sewaktu disapu atau ditotol. Ada opsi otomatis untuk brightness dan tak tampak setting untuk panel sentuhnya.

Speaker letaknya ada di kiri bawah belakang. Tombol volume ada di kiri vodi dan jack audio 3,5 mm serta tombol power letaknya ada di atas bodi. Port micrUSB letaknya ada di bawah bodi sementara slot microSD disembunyikan di balik casing, begitu pula dengan SIM.

Cross Platform YouTube Music Player MusicTube!

For the good or worse, by using online video sharing services such as the extremely popular YouTube for instance, we can watch or listen to thousands or millions of songs without having to pay a penny :). Although I dont use it that often (because I have a limited-bandwidth internet connection, damn!) but if you use it quite often then would it be nice if we could have a dedicated application that lets us listen/search & manage all the music files on YouTube from our desktop with ease?.

In that case, Im pretty sure there are quite a few already but I came across this one called "MusicTube" and its awesome!. Its a cross-platform application written in the Qt GUI toolkit and supports MS Windows, Mac OSX and Ubuntu at the moment.

Although its not fully Open-Source + not entirely free either (youll have to buy it after the trial period) ... but its a pretty cool utility which could be worth trying, for some. 

Main features...

*. As said, the UI is designed using the Qt toolkit and looks quite simple and easy to use. Although Im using the Windows version rather than the Ubuntu one because it gave me a dependency error (concerning Qt of course) while trying to install it in Ubuntu 11.04.

*. Search (with automatic suggestions) and manage playlists (with Shuffle or Repeat functions). 

*. Display album art, artist name, etc.

*. Even supports video!. 

*. Although its still kinda really new (somewhat in a beta stage) but still things like the seek bar, etc worked really well (with speed I might add). 

*. Automatic Lyrics support.

*. Change volume levels.

*. Copy the currently playing files link. 

*. Only play "Live" performance or switch to "Cover" mode which only plays the remixed ones.

*. Shows different versions of the same song.

Well, thats about it for the features. Although it wouldve been nice if there was a feature to download the files (perhaps its in the premium version). But other than that, Im really impressed with its performance concerning the fact that its relatively new and all that. 

Anyhow, if interested, you can get it from this official MusicTube page. Its supposed to work in Ubuntu 10.04 and up but as said before, it gave me errors while trying to install it under 11.04 Natty Narwhal. Other than that, if you want to keep listening to millions of songs (both video and audio) all the time for free (well, you gotta pay for the app) by using the YouTube online video sharing service ... then MusicTube is a pretty cool tool, me thinks :D. Collaborative file (text file in this case) editing is a pretty common thing these days because computer networks or Cloud computing in general is becoming a "major thing" these days.

So basically if youre a part of a network and looking for a way to edit a document (in simple text format) with multiple users without having to lock it... then Gobby is a cross-platform ready, free application that can do, just that!.

Although dont hope it to be an advanced or a fully featured text editor since its purpose is to let you create a basic document that can be proof-read later. Its designed using the GTK+ toolkit yet integrates with GNU/Linux, MS Windows and Mac OSX platforms quite well too.

Main features...

*. Comes with a simple UI.

*. Connect/Disconnect with other networks using different ports, user authentications, create a session or simply open your previously used session.

*. As said its a basic text editor but lets you do things like: Find and replace text, go to lines, enable/disable automated indention, change font related settings (size, bold, etc) ...

... although most of these feature will have to be accessed via the "Preferences" window using the menu which is not the most efficient way to do that and could be the only complaint here (or perhaps its more oriented around computer programmers). 

*. You can start a text file from scratch or can open an existing one.

*. Syntax highlighting for various programming languages: C/C++, Java, HTML, XML, Perl, Prolog, etc.

*. Text wrapping.

*. Automatic recognition of various programming language related file extensions.

Apa saja keuntungan dari Karakter dengan tipe Cross Job? Karakter dengan tipe Cross Job, dapat mengoptimalkan semua skill (Basic, Expert dan Elite) dari semua job dasar yang ada (Dekat, Jauh dan Force). Kita lihat contohnya:

Karakter dengan job dasar Warrior pada saat mencapai level 30, mengambil pilihan job 1 dari alur spiritualist (kita ambil contoh untuk bangsa Bellato: job Chandra), maka karakter ini dapat menggunakan skill Warrior dari basic sampai Elite dan juga bisa menggunakan skill Force dari basic hingga Elite yang tentunya sangat berguna dalam pembentukan karakter. Jika Spiritualis Bellato melakukan Cross Job dari Spiritualis ke Ranger, maka dia akan memiliki tingkat hindaran dan serangan yang cukup luar biasa. Selain memiliki skill Evasion dari Ranger, karakter ini juga dapat memiliki skill Agility yang efeknya menambah tingkat hindaran pada karakter.

The Window.postMessage helps to make scripts talk over different domain connections. When you call a function on an external iframe from the parent window, Javascript wont allow it.
Thats because of the Cross Domain Policy that makes this not possible. But its possible since Javascript introduced postMessage function.

Suppose you want to call a function on an cross domain iframe with id monu. Let the function be subins(). Heres how to do it using postMessage technic.

window.frames[monu].postMessage(alert,*);

The alert in the code above is not a function. The parameter targetOrigin is set to * because we dont know the url of the iframe. Now the code in the iframe :
