Weve seen Terminal Emulators of all sizes and shapes for Linux, but nothing like this yet. cool-old-term is one gorgeous looking Terminal emulator.

How to install cool-old-term Terminal Emulator in Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17?

  • Developed by Swordfishs Labs,  cool-old-term is a terminal emulator which tries to mimic the look and feel of the old cathode tube screens. It has been designed to be eye-candy, customizable, and reasonably lightweight.
  • Uses the Konsole engine which guarantees a trouble-free experience. Heres what you need to do install and use cool-old-term in Ubuntu 14.04.
  • Copy-paste the following command into Terminal.
sudo apt-get install git build-essential qmlscene qt5-qmake qt5-default qtdeclarative5-dev qtdeclarative5-controls-plugin qtdeclarative5-qtquick2-plugin libqt5qml-graphicaleffects qtdeclarative5-dialogs-plugin qtdeclarative5-localstorage-plugin qtdeclarative5-window-plugin
  • All the important dependencies are now installed. Compile and install cool-old-term in Ubuntu 14.04 by using the following commands.
git clone https://github.com/Swordifish90/cool-old-term.git
cd cool-old-term
cd konsole-qml-plugin
qmake && make && make install
cd ..
./cool-old-term
  • Execute the commands one by one. The final command will launch the cool-old-term for you. Heres a few more screenshots. Let us know how well it worked for you.

Cross Platform Android Emulator Genymotion 2 1 0 Brings Android 4 4 Support

Cross Platform Android Emulator Genymotion 2 1 0 Brings Android 4 4 Support

Genymotion 2.1.0 has been released, the new version bringing some new features as well as support for the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.

For those not familiar with Genymotion, this is a fast, cross-platform Android emulator that comes with pre-configured Android (x86 with OpenGL hardware acceleration) images which support multi-touch gestures, Ethernet, emulation widgets for GPS, battery, camera and more.

Genymotion

Genymotion is available as free to use but without some features, or with a license (Indie or Business) which enables extra features.

Genymotion 2.1.0 brings new features for both the free and commercial versions:
  • new commercial features:
    • edit Android ID and Device ID (IMEI/MEID number) values from Genymotion;
    • a new "pixel perfect" mode was added - in this mode, each pixel of the device will be displayed using only one pixel of your monitor;
    • factory reset;
    • clone virtual devices;
  • new features for all users:
    • Genymotion now supports copy/paste from the host to the virtual device, or from the virtual device to the host using Android built-in copy/paste feature;
    • virtual device CPU number and memory size can now be modified from the device settings;
  • bug fixes:
    • you can now resume virtual devices download;
    • when downloading a virtual device, Genymotion could crash if a timeout occurred. This issue is now fixed;
    • the window size of the virtual device is now correctly resized to fit the host screen when rotating;
    • when uninstalling Genymotion on Linux, the directory specified on installation was deleted, sometimes deleting non-Genymotion files. Genymotion now uses its own directory to fix the problem.

Genymotion

Also, all users (both paid and free) can now use the latest Android 4.4 KitKat with the following virtual devices: Galaxy Note 3, Moto X, Nexus 4, 5, 7 and 10.

As a reminder, ARM library support and Google Apps were removed from Genymotion due to licensing issues. I have added instructions on adding these back in our initial Genymotion article, which also includes Linux installation instructions.

Download Genymotion

If youre upgrading from Genymotion 2.0.0, you must delete the old virtual devices and create new ones to be able to take advantage of the newly added features and bug fixes. Old virtual devices will continue to work, but without these new features / fixes.

Download Genymotion for Linux, Windows or Mac (you need to sign up for a free account to be able to download it)

For how to install Genymotion in Linux and get Google Apps and ARM library support, see: Genymotion: Fast, Easy To Use Android (x86) Emulator With OpenGL Hardware Acceleration Support.

cool retro term terminal emulator mimics the looks of old CRT screens Ubuntu PPA

cool retro term terminal emulator mimics the looks of old CRT screens Ubuntu PPA

Remember cool-old-term? The gorgeous Terminal Emulator has a name change and is now called cool-retro-term. And I think retro fits the description better, a welcome change. More importantly, cool-retro-term now comes in a nicely packaged Ubuntu PPA making the whole installation process a breeze.

Install cool-retro-term in Ubuntu (PPA available for 15.10, 14.04 LTS)

Remember all the hoops you had to jump through just to install cool-retro-term (previously called cool-old-term) in your Ubuntu? Well, thats all history now. The new releases of cool-retro-term Terminal Emulator comes with its own Ubuntu repositories with support for Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and limited support for Ubuntu 15.04.

For those who didnt read our one year old post about cool-retro-term Terminal Emulator, here are a few things you should know. cool-retro-term is a Terminal Emulator that mimics the look and feel of old-school CRT monitors. First released more than a year and a half ago, cool-retro-term had gone through several iterations and is now ever more stable and lightweight. Highlight though is the availability of new stable releases via PPA for Ubuntu based distros. Heres how you install cool-retro-term in Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily) and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bugs-launchpad-net-falkensweb/cool-retro-term
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cool-retro-term

The above steps should work with Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic) and Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid) as well. If you like the project and wish to contribute, head over to Swordfish Labs. Thanks for reading.
