Convert odd CDimages to ISO

If you want to burn CD images to CD usually you use the ISO format.
However, there are other formats containing raw date of an CD image.
These formats are NRG, IMG, CUE/BIN and MDF.

to convert these images to ISo you need to install software thats found in the universe and multiverse repository. These software programs are command line programms. If youre not comfortable with it, its not for you.

To enable this repository navigate to [System] > [Administration] > [Software Sources] on the applications menu.

Enter your superuser password.

The software sources window should appear. Enable the "Community maintained open source software (universe)" and "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)" option.

Now you have the universe/multiverse repositories enabled!


to install the software needed for the conversion install these packages:
bchunk (CUE/BIN to ISO),
ccd2iso (IMG to ISO),
mdf2iso (MDF to ISO),
nrg2iso (NRG to ISO),

so open a terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install bchunk ccd2iso mdf2iso nrg2iso

enter your password and there you go.

Heres what to do to convert from...
open a terminal, go to the folder where the file is located (using the cd command) and type one of the following commands:

IMG to ISO: ccd2iso filename.img filename.iso
MDF to ISO: mdf2iso filename.mdf filename.iso
NRG to ISO: nrg2iso filename.nrg filename.iso
CUE/BIN to ISO: bchunk filename.bin filename.cue filename.iso

OVG TO AVI OR WMV:

WinFF is a GUI for the command line video converter, FFMPEG. It will convert most any video file that FFmpeg will convert. WinFF does multiple files in multiple formats at one time. You can for example convert mpegs, flvs, and movs, all into avis all at once. WinFF is available for Windows 95, 98 , ME, NT, XP, VISTA, and Debian, Ubuntu, Redhat based GNU/Linux distributions. Even though I am not a fan of audio books and the only thing I use my iPod for is listening music still while exploring Festival(which is basically a General multi-lingual speech synthesis system) I found out that its very easy to convert normal text files into mp3 using festival . Now this could be especially useful for people who either listen to audio books or people who have difficulty in reading.

First we would need to install festival. We can install festival with the following command :

sudo apt-get install festival

Now we need to install voices which would be used to dictate the text (install any one of the following ) :

To install British Accented male voice issue the following command :

sudo apt-get install festvox-rablpc16k

To install American Accented male voice issue the following command:

sudo apt-get install festival festvox-kallpc16k

Now once you have installed festival and voice package we are ready to convert text files .wav files .

Lets say you want computer to read file named kaddu.txt you would need to pipe(send output of one command to other ) the cat command to festival. You can do so by issuing the following command :

cat -A kaddu.txt | festival --tts

Now instead if you want to convert kaddu.txt to kaddu.wav you can do so by piping the output of cat to a tool that comes with festival text2wave. You can do so by issuing the following command in the terminal window :

cat -A kaddu.txt | text2wave -o kaddu.wav

Now however if you want to remove special characters and want festival/text2wav to read only a to z,A to Z, space, �,�,�.�,�!�,�?�. You can do so by piping the output of cat to sed and then piping the output of sed to text2wav/festival.

cat kaddu.txt |sed s/[^a-zA-Z .,!?]//g|festival --tts

or

cat kaddu.txt|sed s/[^a-zA-Z .,!?]//g|text2wave -o kaddu.wav

Now the (.wav) file produced is uncompressed and are huge in size so you might like to convert it to mp3 to reduce its size and to allow the files to be played on iPod or any other mp3 player. You can convert .wav files easily to (.mp3) file format by using lame .

To install lame issue the following command in the terminal window :

sudo apt-get install lame

after istallation is over to convert say kaddu.wav to kaddu.mp3 issue the following command :

lame -f kaddu.wav kaddu.mp3

NOTE : I am using -f switch here which basically encodes mp3 file faster and in lower quality .

Windows XP Professional supports two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Basic disk storage uses partition-oriented disks. A basic disk contains basic volumes (primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives).

Dynamic disk storage uses volume-oriented disks, and includes features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes).

General Notes
Before you change a basic disk to a dynamic disk, note these items:


You must have at least 1 megabyte (MB) of free space on any master boot record (MBR) disk that you want to convert. This space is automatically reserved when the partition or volume is created in Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. However, it may not be available on partitions or volumes that are created in other operating systems.

When you convert to a dynamic disk, the existing partitions or logical drives on the basic disk are converted to simple volumes on the dynamic disk.

After you convert to a dynamic disk, the dynamic volumes cannot be changed back to partitions. You must first delete all dynamic volumes on the disk, and then convert the dynamic disk back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, you must first back up or move the data to another volume.

After you convert to a dynamic disk, local access to the dynamic disk is limited to Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000.

If your disk contains multiple installations of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000, do not convert to a dynamic disk. The conversion operation removes partition entries for all partitions on the disk with the exception of the system and boot volumes for the current operating system.

Dynamic disks are not supported on portable computers or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

Before you change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk, note that all existing volumes must be deleted from the disk before you can convert it back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back up the data, or move your data to another volume.

How to Convert a Basic Disk to a Dynamic Disk

To convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk:

1) Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

2) Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

3) Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

4) In the left pane, click Disk Management.

5) In the lower-right pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then click Convert to Dynamic Disk.

NOTE:You must right-click the gray area that contains the disk title on the left side of the Details pane. For example, right-click Disk 0.

6) Select the check box that is next to the disk that you want to convert (if it is not already selected), and then clickOK.

7) Click Details if you want to view the list of volumes in the disk.

8) Click Convert.

9) Click Yes when you are prompted to convert, and then click OK.

How to Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk

To change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk:

1) Back up all the data on all the volumes on the disk you want to convert to a basic disk.

2) Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

3) Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

4) Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

5) In the left pane, click Disk Management.

6) Right-click a volume on the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Delete Volume.

7) Click Yes when you are prompted to delete the volume.

8) Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each volume on the dynamic disk.

9) After you have deleted all the volumes on the dynamic disk, right-click the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Convert to Basic Disk.

sudo alien -k rpm-package-file.rpm

Actually this is very simple to accomplish. As stated before you need to unload all the drivers off of the virtual machine. get it back to the standard default drivers that came with it when you first installed the OS. This can be done a few ways but the easiest would be with sysprep (otherwise you an manually uninstall them all... never tried it this way but I suppose that it could work).

After you get it back to the factory defaults it is as simple as cloning the HDD via a program that you can boot into. My personal favourite is Hiren boot CD. I use the Norton Ghost utility off it to create a clone of the virtual HDD onto a DVD. This is accomplished by booting the virtual machine up with the Hiren CD.

With that DVD then I can boot up the physical machine with Hiren go to the Norton Ghost program and then reverse the process uploading the new image off of the DVD onto the HDD.

Overall this process takes about a hour, of course depending on the size of the virtual machine and the speed of the PC that you are using.
