Create a System Repair Disc in Windows 7

Create a System Repair Disc in Windows 7

Create a System Repair Disc in Windows 7
The new version of Windows seems to be a lot for stable than previous releases, however you never know when a malfunction might occur. Today we take a look at an option in Windows 7 that lets you create a System Repair disc in case you need to boot from it to recover your OS.

Create System Repair Disc

Type system repair disc into the search box in the Start menu.
The dialog box opens where you select the right drive and click Create disc. A CD will be fine as it only takes up 142MB of space.
Using the Disc
If you are having problems with your machine just pop in the recovery disc and boot from it and enter into Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].
After it boots up you can access recovery tools or restore the computer back to a system image (see our article on creating a system image in Windows 7).
Now you can choose from different recovery options to help you get your machine back up and running.
You never know when an Operating System disaster might occur, but having a System Recovery Disc to boot from should be part of your backup and recovery toolbox in case it does.

Silenzio inquieto in cabina passeggeri.

Fate come me: usate come nome NSA oppure CIA.

Crossover Games 7 User experience

Crossover Games 7 User experience

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I enjoy gaming, though the days where I could game through the night or during weekends are long behind me, I do still enjoy a game of something here or there, time, work and life allowing.

My mac is a physical symbol of this dual personality of mine, Ive got my OS X partition where I do my work and general tinkering and my Windows bootcamp partition for the gaming. So far this setup hasnt worked out too badly, though recently when I have had time, I sometimes cant be bothered to reboot into Windows and for how often I get around to playing games, having a chunk of windows real estate taking up a good few gigs of my hdd made me think if there wasnt an alternative solution to get my gaming fix.

Ideally I would prefer to be able to play all of my games under OS X, I prefer it and should opportunity present itself, then a game is just a click away. Unfortunately due to directx and other associated windows technologies, some games that Id like to play just simply arent available, others may come out as cider ports eventually and EA Games has just simply let most mac gamers down by not delivering on its promises.

So this made me think that I would try and see what alternatives to bootcamp there are, in terms of getting some of the games Id like to play under windows running in OS X. Bearing in mind the technological difficulties mentioned above, I decided to focus on some older titles as the hardware should be more than able to cope and technologically weve long since moved on from Directx 8, so even the software should cope...shouldnt it?

Now as you may know, I have been giving Crossover Games a try and thought that I would use this as an opportunity to detail my experiences with it and my thoughts. Now remember these are my own personal experiences, I admit I may have done something wrong not having used a Crossover product before but still worth sharing.

Initially I was quite excited by the idea that I would be able to run a lot of my older games under Crossover and what initially pushed me in that direction as well was that my "hybrid" mac/pc CDs for Diablo 2 etc were actually just PC versions.

The games I have tested so far with Crossover are Diablo 2, Diablo 2 - The Frozen Throne, StarCraft, and Battlefield 2.

How it works.

Crossover works by creating a bottle that is essentially a self-contained "windows" environment that you install the game into in order to run it. You can create bottles based on Windows 2000, XP, 98 and so on.

There are different ways to install games, first of all you can create a bottle as I mentioned above and then install the game into that or you can run the game installer from the CD (Crossover usually detects it) and then from there create the bottle to install the game into. I have tried both methods and I cant honestly say that one approach is better than the other, at least for me, it didnt seem to make a difference whether the game(s) would work or not.

I first tried Diablo 2, numerous times without success. I have the multi-disc version and on my initial attempt (I put the install CD in and let Crossover do its thing), it would not detect my play disc when it was inserted.

I next tried to create the bottle first (win2k) and then install into that and ran into the same problem, the play disc was not detected. Again as I mention in one of my posts below, I came across a post on the internet that suggested using disc images instead, so I imaged my Diablo discs using DD and then tried again.

The first time this work and I managed to successfully install Diablo 2 by using crossover to eject the discs and toast to mount them as the installer requested them. Unfortunately I then immediately tried to install the expansion, which got to 99% and then started to request a non-existent disc, forcing me to cancel it.

The second time, I repeated the above, except at the end of the Diablo 2 install, I instead downloaded and installed the latest Windows patch for Diablo 2 from Blizzard.

To do this;

  • From the Crossover Games home screen click Install Unsupported Software
  • Click continue
  • Click Other existing bottle and select your bottle (it will say its likely to produce errors but it always says that)
  • Click continue
  • Click "Choose installer file" and Install
  • In the window that opens, navigate to the .exe file you want and click "use this"

Crossover will then attempt to run the installer and let it do its thing.

The patch finished successfully, so with Diablo 2 now up to date, I tried launching it and it informed me that it cannot find the Diablo 2 playdisc.

So I thought I would be clever and try a nocd patch. I havent managed to make this work for Diablo, it could be that I didnt find the correct patch or that it simply doesnt work. I havent had time to do more digging and to be honest, I prefer to buy stuff as its less hassle (usually) and you can go online without too many worries. That being said usually the first thing I do with a game Ive bought is look for a nocd patch as having to have the disc in the drive is a pain.

To put a nocd or to copy any other kind of file (such as a savegame) into a game directory in a bottle, do the following;

  • On the Crossover Games menubar, click on Configure and Manage Bottles
  • On the left hand side of the window, select the bottle that you want to copy the file to
  • On the tabs on the right hand side, click advanced
  • From the advanced tab, click the button open C: drive in finder
  • Now you can just drag and drop your file into this window

So, after trying to get diablo 2 to work and not having much luck, I decided to try with the expansion, so I duplicated the Diablo 2 bottle and then installed the expansion onto the original bottle.

To install the expansion I basically mounted both the diablo 2 playdisc and the expansion disc images using toast, when Crossover detected that the discs were inserted it asked me if I wanted to install the game, so I told it to go ahead with the expansion install and left it to work.

Mounting both of the discs was a bit of an experiment but it seemed to work ok, interestingly enough as well, it avoided the problem I had (mentioned in my previous post) about the expansion asking for a different disc at the end. Once installed I again patched it to the latest version using the method described earlier but ran into the same problems as with Diablo 2. For some reason it would no longer detect any of the CDs even though they were used for the install, it wouldnt detect the original CD when inserted into the drive and I couldnt find a no-cd in order to make it work.

I next tried StarCraft, for this I created a win2000 bottle, installed StarCraft into it, patched it and that was it - this worked providing I had the disc image mounted. (Why it works here and not for Diablo I dont know). The game runs in fullscreen though and the fans go into high gear quite quickly.

One problem I did come across with it though was that the mouse cursor was lagging horribly. So I quit the game and decided to try running it in a window. Crossover allows you to run commands like this, just as you would from the run option in windows, just do the following;

  • In Crossover, click on Programs and Run Command.
  • Select the bottle from the dropdown menu.
  • Click the browse button and find the game .exe and select ok
  • At the end of the string that appears in the Run Command field, append what you need e.g. -window

  • You can save this custom setting by clicking the button "Save command to the programs menu" which also assigns a standard icon to it and makes it easy to run again later.

For StarCraft though, this didnt quite work, when I started the game it still started in fullscreen mode though now the cursor worked fine but the game still pushed the fans quite hard. In the end due to the fan noise I just replaced my starcraft cds for updated versions and installed in under OS X.

Finally I decided to give BF2 a try as I quite like this game and saw that it had an honourable mention in the Crossover forums. I installed it into an XP bottle and followed the steps outlined in the forum for applying a nocd patch to it but when it launched I just got a black screen and then it quit.

I tried patching it to 1.41 and using a nocd for that but again it would launch with a black screen and then quit. This was a shame as Id love to be able to play BF2 on the mac.

So to sum up my impressions of Crossover and whats becoming a long post, I think it definitely has potential and hopefully one day I will be able to use it to replace the bootcamp partition on my hdd, unfortunately for me, that day isnt here yet. I think I will give it some more time to get to the next point release or two before I try it again. That being said the program is definitely good though a little clunky at times but what they have accomplished so far is impressive, I think in a couple of releases it really will be a viable contender to replace the bootcamp partition for some people.

If I had had more time, I would have tried it with steam as this is supposed to be support quite well, I would have liked to have tried Half Life 2 Episode 1 and Bioshock, the former I have no doubt would work but the question is how well? As for Bioshock, I wouldnt expect it to work but I wanted to try and see. Unfortunately I only have one day left of the trial period and I know I will not have time to take advantage of it this weekend. So what I plan to do now is try to uninstall the games and then uninstall Crossover but I will cover that in the next post.

Creating Your ultimate Ubuntu 7 10 Desktop

Creating Your ultimate Ubuntu 7 10 Desktop

Creating Your ultimate Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop

Ubuntu 7.10 Codenamed Gusty Gibbon was released few weeks back with much fanfare ,now Ubuntu for past couple of years has been one of the most popular Desktop Linux distributions . Ubuntu 7.10 includes a number of features , applets and Wizards to simplify desktop Linux experience however because of many licensing restrictions it does not include out of the box support for popular audio/video codecs and many commercial but good applications . Also because of the limitation of trying to accommodate all kind of applications on single CD Ubuntu comes with a limited set of applications .

Now , i often have arguments with my friends who are new to computers that windows is better , mac is better and blah blah blah and they often use this argument that its difficult for newbies to install applications , codecs etc on Linux as a way to justify their arguments . So well i decided being such a Linux fanatic i have to do something about it so well i thought of writing a guide sort of step by step tutorial that would allow anyone to have a kicking Linux desktop with most of the codecs enabled and descent set of applications in few steps .

Steps Written in RED are of paramount importance and other steps may not work correctly if these steps are not followed .

Step 1 : - Enabling Additional Repositories

Now many applications need additional repositories to be installed or some to be enabled in Synaptic package manager so before trying out steps given below ensure that repositories in order.

Launch Synaptic Package Manager (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager ) , then in Synaptic package manager go to (Settings -> Repositories ) you will find window like this . Ensure that all the check boxes are marked leaving source code(if you want to you can enable this also but you are not going to need this unless you are software developer) the dialog box should look like this .
Dialog Box showing the repositories that should be enabled

After completing above step you will find a dialog box like this

Besides these you may also like to add medibuntu repositories if you want to install applications like ------- , to add mediubuntu repositories follow the following steps

echo "deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

and

wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

2. Enabling Cool Graphics Effects

Unlike previous releases of Ubuntu where one had to manually download and install compiz, beryl etc (Compiz Fusion is composite window manager that provides best features of Compiz and Beryl) from Repositories if one wanted to have glitzy visual effects . Ubuntu 7.10 comes with Compiz Fusion pre-installed and on supported hardware offers a wide array of Visual Effect . Now depending on graphic hardware of computer one could chose from three level of Visual Effect (From System -> Preferences -> Appearance )

None : - This mode causes Ubuntu to use Metacity instead of Compiz Fusion , with no visual effect

Basic : - Has only simple visual effects like shadows , fading windows-menus etc

Advanced : - Recommended for PC with descent graphic hardware , enables effects like wobbly windows, transparency , animated workspace switching etc
Visual Effect Dialog Box
Now , the biggest advantage of Compiz Fusion is even on really slow hardware one can have descent set of visual effects even on my slow laptop i could use Extra graphics effects though it was painful while using application like OpenOffice because of my slow hardware.

However , compiz-fusion is capable of much more and you can enable more desktop effects /customize compiz by typing the following command in the terminal window : -

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
After completing above step , you can customize compiz by going to System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings .

3. Installing Audio/Video Codecs

The first thing anyone who wants to use Ubuntu as a replacement to their windows operating system would like to do is install support for all kind of audio/video multimedia codecs . Ubuntu does not come installed with support for major audio/video formats because of licensing issue and other issues . To install support for audio/video codecs type in the following command in the terminal window : -

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
And if you want to install mp3 support in nautilus you may like to install mpg123 which is a nice command line based utility for playing mp3 files and it works well even on modest hardware .

sudo apt-get install mpg123

This would enable most of the popularly used codecs in the Totem Movie player which uses the GStreamer framework to play audio/video files.

If you want to use a different media player and framework you might try installing MPlayer or VLC (depending on which you prefer ) instructions on installing them are listed below .

Installing VLC Player : -

LC Player is another of popular video player available under Linux . It is released under GNU General Public license and is available for different platform including Windows,Linux,BeOS,Mac OS X etc. VLC player is based upon free open source libraries like libdvdcss,FFMpeg for decoding various video formats. One Important feature of VLC Player is its ability to play files over NetWork Protocols. The Frontend of VLC player is created using wxWidgets toolkit and its appearance can be changed by using different skins. One Popular feature of VLC Player is its ability to play files that are incomplete/broken or partially downloaded , making it useful for previewing file while downloading on file-sharing networks.

To install VLC Player type the following command in the terminal window : -

sudo apt-get install vlc

After completing above step launch vlc player from (Applications -> Sound and Video -> VLC media player )

3. Installing Linux DC++ Client

DC++ is a popuar tool used for p2p file sharing and is especially popular in college campuses , to install dc++ for linux follow the following instructions .

Type the following command in the terminal window: -

sudo apt-get install linuxdcpp
And after completing above step launch dcpp from (Applications -> Internet -> DC++)
Linux Client of popular DC++ Application

aMule

aMule is alternative to popular eMule program on windows platform , amule supports/works with eDonkey2000 Network or Kadnetwork and allows P2P sharing of files . aMule is available on number of platforms , Current supported systems include Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Windows and Solaris.

To install aMule type the following command in the terminal window : -

sudo aptitude install amule
After completing above step launch aMule from (Application -> Internet -> aMule )

4. Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

* Requires Mediubuntu repositories

Type in the following command in the terminal window :

sudo aptitude install acroread acroread-plugins acroread-escript

and , plugin for firefox

sudo aptitude install mozilla-acroread

5. Installing Macromedia Flash support and Sun Java JRE

Both Macromedia Flash and JRE are an important part of internet experience almost all the websites use either of the two technology to add extra functionality to the web page . By default Ubuntu does not come preinstalled with support for these two , however they can be installed quite easily by typing in the following command in the terminal window .

To install flash type in the following command in the terminal window this command is going to download a script that would further download the files needed for installing flash-support and install it .
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
Script downloading further files needed for installing flash support

and to install Sun Java JRE type in the following command in the terminal window .

sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

6. Scribus

Scribus is one of the most impressive Desktop Publishing application that is free and cross platform . Scribus is available on Windows , Mac OS X , Linux , OS/2 etc . It is highly suited for preparing file for professional quality image setting equipment .It has high end page layout features of the kind found in Adobe PageMaker, QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign.

It can also create animated and interactive PDF presentations and forms. Example uses include writing small newspapers, brochures, newsletters, posters and books.

Anyways , to install scribus type the following command in the terminal (Application ->Accessories -> Terminal )

sudo aptitude install scribus
and after completing above step launch scribus by typing "scribus" in terminal window.
Scribus on Ubuntu

7. Downloader For X

Downloader for X is a nice download manager that allows downloading files from Internet , pausing them and downloading them later . It also supports splitting file into number of segments so that files could be downloaded quickly . However one thing that i didnt like about is its interface is somewhat difficult as compared to some of the download manager available on Windows.

Anyways to install " Downloader for X " type the following command in the terminal window.

sudo aptitude install d4x "

After installation is over launch Downloader for X by typing d4x in the terminal window , or by going to (Applications-> Internet -> Downloader for X )

This is how Downloader for X looks

8.
Google Desktop

Google Desktop allows one to full text search of a users e-mail, computer files, music, photos, chat, and Web pages viewed,OpenOffice documents , PDF files and more .

Now similar tools already existed on Linux like beagle (supported by novell ) , meta tracker etc . However Google Desktop search is not based on any of these tools and uses its proprietary algorithms to search for files on the computer ,also being 1.0 release and more stable then these products it could be preferred over tools like beagle .

To install type the following command in the terminal window : -

wget http://dl.google.com/linux/google-repo-setup.sh

and

sudo bash google-repo-setup.sh

Now after completing above steps to install Google Desktop Search type the following command in the terminal window : -

sudo apt-get update

and

sudo apt-get install google-desktop-linux

After completing above step logout of gnome session and relogin you would find the following dialog window

select the appropriate option : -

Now after choosing appropriate option you would find Google Desktop icon in the bar at the top of the screen , now it would automatically scan and index files on computer and store it in local database which could be searched using web browser .

9. Google Picasa

Google Picasa is an extremely professional good looking photo management application available on Windows ,Linux and Mac OS (??) . Now Google Picasa has a number of features that many photo management software on Linux dont have further Google Picasa looks very user friendly as compared to similar open source application available on linux . Now Google Picasa for Linux is not a native linux application but runs on Linux thru application layer called wine which allows many windows application to run flawlessly on Linux.

Now to install Google - Picasa type the following command in the terminal window

wget http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/pool/non-free/p/picasa/picasa_2.2.2820-5_i386.deb
and

After completing above step launch Google Picasa from

Some Tips to consider before running picasa (taken from google picasa website )

Tips

  • If you use NFS, when Picasa first starts, tell it to scan just your desktop! Otherwise Picasa gets real slow while it scans all your NFS directories!
  • To get Picasa to see pictures on your hard drive, click "File / Add Folder" (NOT "Import").
  • When adding a folder to Picasa, the default action is to remove the folder from Picasa. You have to actively choose Scan once or Scan always.
  • Picasa is not supported over remote X connections.

Create Wireless Ad Hoc Network in Windows 7

Create Wireless Ad Hoc Network in Windows 7
See you again with habno, this time Habno want to share knowledge about How to Create Ad Hoc Wifi network in Windows 7.
Previously, whats WiFi network? WiFi network is a wireless networking technologies (wireless networks) or what we commonly refer to the wireless network. While the Ad Hoc WiFi Network is a WiFi network mode that allows two or more device (computer or router) to communicate with each other directly (known as peer to peer) without going through the Access Point.

How to create Ad Hoc WiFi Network is very easy to use Windows 7 let alone us, Do the following:
  • Make sure the Wifi or WLAN driver is installed, if there are no drivers where possible WLANnya be active.
  • Enable WLAN our laptop.
  • Click the Windows Start button, in the Search programs and files type: adhoc and then Enter.
  • Set up window will display an Ad Hoc Network, then click Next.

    • Fill in the Network name or the name of the Ad Hoc us that we call the SSID. For example: habnoshare, select the security type: Open, WEP or WPA2-Personal. I recommend use of WPA2-Personal security him as the most secure type. Security key contents of the password such as a password, check the Save this network, then click Next.

Ad Hoc network that we make is done, then stayed to connect a laptop or other computer with Ad Hoc that we have made earlier, when a user (other laptops) that connect to our network, the status that had been waiting for Adhoc users will change to Connected .

    Good luck ...

cRPG Running Diablo 1 on Windows 7

cRPG Running Diablo 1 on Windows 7

Theres a fair amount of scattered, occasionally-conflicting information about running Diablo 1 (the first Diablo game) under Windows 7. (If you found this post, youve probably already seen some of this info.) Here are my experiences.

    Out of the Box:
Diablo 1 will install and run under Windows 7. However, the original unpatched version of the game stores multiplayer character files in the WINDOWS directory. This means you have to run the game as Administrator. (Running the game from the CD automatically prompts you to do this.) If you dont, you wont be able to create a new multiplayer character or see any of the multiplayer characters you created during previous sessions. (I havent messed with single player.)

Connecting to Battle.net results in a long pause with the message "Searching for the fastest Battle.net server...", which eventually times out after about 1 minute with a "Could not connect" error message.

It is also not possible to play multiplayer across a LAN using IPX because Windows 7 no longer supports IPX. I installed Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC. While this allows for IPX, it is not a solution because DirectX will not work under XP Mode. This means the game wont even start under virtual XP.

    IPXWrapper:
Instead, I went back to Windows 7 and used IPXWrapper. You just need to copy the 3 provided .dll files into your Diablo directory to do this. (This code seems safe. I skimmed the source, which is well-formatted, and I didnt notice anything obviously strange. I havent had any strange new processes or network connections made since running it, either.)

I was trying to play Diablo between a Windows 7 and a Windows XP machine. Note that IPXWrapper is tunneling IPX over UDP, so you cant play using IPXWrapper with a machine that is natively running IPX. All the machines involved need to be using IPXWrapper. But using IPXWrapper is actually easier than installing and configuring IPX on Windows XP anyway, so this is not a hardship once you know about it.

    Patching:
Having to run Diablo as Administrator annoyed me somewhat. I was also curious if I could get Battle.net to work. (It is no longer listed even on the Battle.net Classic site).

Installing the latest patch to 1.09 means Diablo will now save multiplayer characters in the diablo/ game directory. Thus, running as Administrator is no longer required. Also, I could now connect to a Battle.net server. (I did not bother actually creating an account and logging on, though.)

    Bad/Broken Colors:
Patching breaks the color palette, though. This is obvious in the opening Blizzard animation and in the game itself (though the pre-game menus look fine). Some have reported luck with the Compatibility settings, but none of the combos I tried worked for me. (For example, setting the mode to Win98 or earlier meant the game couldnt find the CD-ROM anymore.)

The weird trick some have reported of opening the Windows Screen Resolution settings window and leaving it open in the background also did not fix this for me.

(2014-06 Update: The explorer-based fix below no longer works on my system. However, see Marys comment on this post about a simple registry fix from Blizzard that solves this problem.)

What did work was: start Diablo, Alt-Tab and open the system Task Manager, and kill explorer.exe. Then Alt-Tab back to a correctly-colored Diablo. (Weird, I know.) When youre done with the game, you can return to the task manager and File -> New Task (Run...) -> explorer.exe again to bring back your task bar, etc.

As reported elsewhere, you can automate all this with a simple batch file. Save the following into a file named diablo.bat in your Diablo game directory:

    taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
    diablo.exe
    pause
    start explorer.exe

You can now change your start menu shortcut to point to diablo.bat instead of diable.exe. You just have to hit any key in the console window after you quit Diablo bring back explorer. (Annoying side-effect: this closes any open Windows Explorer windows too.)

All told, unless you are running into some of the game bugs fixed by the patch or want Battle.net access, its probably easier to just set the original unpatched version to run with Administrator priviledges. Also, if you do patch, all games must be patched to the same level to play over IPX.

On a related sidenote, Diablo 2 runs fine for me out of the box under Windows 7.

Create a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive

Create a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive

The USB flash drive has replaced the floppy disk drive as the best storage medium for transferring files, but it also has its uses as a replacement for CDs and DVDs. USB drives tend to be higher in capacity than disc media, but since they are more expensive, they cannot (yet) really be used as a replacement. There are reasons why you would, however, choose a USB device over a DVD disc, and bootable software is definitely one of them. Not only is it faster to copy data such as setup files from a USB drive, but during usage the access times are also significantly faster. Therefore, installing something like Windows 7 will work that much faster from a USB drive than from a DVD (and of course, is particularly useful for the PCs without an optical drive; this isnt something we should just leave for the pirates to enjoy).

This guide will show you two different ways to create a USB flash drive that works just like a Windows 7 DVD. In order to follow this guide, youll need a USB flash drive with at least 4GB of free space and a copy of the Windows 7 installation disc.

Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool

You are normally given this tool when you purchase from the online Microsoft Store
The easiest way to turn a USB flash drive into a bootable Windows 7 installer is by using the tool Microsoft offers, cunningly named the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. To get started, download the installer [exe] from Microsoft.com and follow the basic steps to put it onto your computer; you can put it on the computer you plan to install Windows 7 on or another one, it doesnt matter.

Once it is installed, it should create an icon on your desktop, so double-click that to open. If you cant find it, use the search function in the Start Menu with a keyword like "USB." Launching it should give you the above screen, and step one is to find the Windows 7 .ISO file. The tool only accepts .ISO images, so we recommend that you convert yours if its in a different DVD image format.
Step two is straightforward: simply choose USB device.
In step three, all you have to do is make sure that you are choosing the correct USB device. If you have other data on the device, move it to your hard drive, another USB device, or somewhere else before proceeding.
The tool will prompt you if it detects data on the device. Once your data is backed up elsewhere, click Erase USB Device.
You will get another prompt warning you that all the data will be wiped. Click Yes to continue.
The format will be very quick, while the copying of the files will take a little bit more time (about 10 to 15 minutes).
Once the process is complete, you should get the above confirmation message. At this point you can close the tool and use the USB drive to install Windows 7. Remember that youll have to choose to boot off the USB drive. Before doing so, you may want to open up the USB drive and double click on setup.exe to see if everything looks okay. If you want to be able to do this manually, see the next section, and if you want to be able to install any edition of Windows 7, skip to the section after that.

    Manual Creation

Maybe you dont like that Microsoft violated the GPL with the first version of the above tool (the company has since GPLed the code), or youre old-school and just love using the command prompt. Regardless of what your reasons are for creating a bootable Windows 7 USB drive manually, we have the scoop on how to do it. First, open the command prompt (if you use UAC make sure to right click it and choose "Run as administrator"), type "diskpart" without the quotes, and hit enter. You can also get here by simply typing "diskpart" without the quotes into the Start Menu and hitting enter.

Now type "list disk" without the quotes and hit enter. Take a look at the Size column and figure out which disk number your USB drive is. Ours is number 1, so were going to type "select disk 1" without the quotes and hit enter. Now were going to wipe it by typing "clean" without the quotes and hitting enter (make sure to do a backup of the contents if you havent already).

At this point we want to prepare the USB drive for the files and make sure it is bootable. Type "create partition primary" without the quotes and hit enter. Then type "select partition 1" without the quotes and hit enter. Next type "active" without the quotes and hit enter. Finally, type "format fs=fat32" without quotes and hit enter (if you choose to use ntfs, youll later have to run the "Bootsect.exe /nt60 G:" command to put boot manager compatible files onto your USB flash drive to make it a bootable device). This one will take a while, so go grab a snack, well wait. When thats done, type "assign" without the quotes and hit enter (this will assign a new drive letter to the USB flash drive).
An AutoPlay window like the one above will appear. Remember the drive letter (in our case it is H:), close the window, type "exit" without the quotes and hit enter. If you are working with an .ISO image, the best way to do this last part is to mount the file with a program like Virtual Clone Drive. Alternatively, you can extract the files from the .ISO image and simply copy them to the USB drive, but since weve been using the command prompt up to this point, well show you how to do the last step with it as well.
If you dont have the command prompt open, open it with administrative privileges, type "xcopy f:*.* /s/e/f hg:" without the quotes and hit enter. Note that you will likely have to replace "f:" with the drive letter for your Windows 7 DVD and "g:" with the drive letter for your USB flash drive. Dont worry if install.wim takes a while to copy: its easily the biggest file on the disc.

Bonus: install any edition of Windows 7

This is a completely optional step and you only want to do this if you want to be able to choose which edition of Windows 7 to install. In the command prompt, type "del g:sourcesei.cfg" without the quotes and hit enter (where g: is your USB flash drive).
This will make sure that your Windows 7 installer no longer has a specific version of Windows 7 set as the default, and you will be prompted to choose the version you want to install. Remember that while this gives you a more universal Windows 7 installer, you still need to make sure you are choosing the edition that you own, or you will not be able to activate Windows 7 with the key you have obtained.
